Hawaiian “Piko” ( Umbilical cord) petroglyphs

Oct. 12th, 2012

Loving this island – each time more and more
We discover so many new places all the time.
It seems inexhaustible.

We drove through the winding road at the Volcano National Park -stopping along the way, enjoying every bit of this new earth, this new land.

and we got the “The Piko (Umbilical cord) Petroglyphs hike”

This spot felt so sacred – so powerful.

“Each “puka” (hole) is created to house a single’s child piko (umbilical cord). There are over 16,000 piko related carvings on this area, a testament of the importance of this mountain and the Ohana (family)”
