4th July, 2016
Pele time!!! Once again.. after so many years!
We woke up at 3am, got all the family ready with headlamps, water, tea and snacks> We started hiking at 4am. It tooks us about 2.5 hrs to get to the Pali (Cliff). Pele was roaring and flowing like I’ve never seen before. As the sun rose, the birds started to sing… so many birds! on that Kipuka (untouched land) full of trees and life! Mango trees being taken, bushes bursting into flames, molten lava lifting up rocks and making them roll down the cliff… it was fantastic! The best 4th of July ever! with all the natural fireworks we could have possibly get!
We attempted to get up the cliff and through the jungle 3 times. At first, I went alone and Daniel stayed with the kids. They were too scared to come. Then, when they saw me come back with photos, they got excited and ready to hike! There was no real trail so we kind of had to make our way through a bit of a thick jungle. It was scary, exhilarating and so amazingly beautiful to witness creation that way. The girls were so courageous and so great to hike with.. Hiking with headlamps on a pitch dark night, over a huge lava field…and then through thick jungle to a super hot flowing river of lava… such troopers!
We had to walk through pretty fresh and hot lava to get to this Surface flow.. Daniel and I first. When we got there, we signaled the girls to join us as it was pretty Epic. Malia Stayed back, ophia made it…. super courageous! Man! it was worth it..
Beauty like no other
Incredible colors and textures! Inspiring..
How does this happen? Lava flowing and freezing up like this? Wow! Pretty epic!
